The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Office of the Under Secretary for Food Safety is convening a June 10, 2016, public meeting in Washington, D.C. to discuss U.S. draft positions for consideration at the 39th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) in Rome, Italy, on June 27-July 1. Agenda activities at the June 10 meeting will include Codex work on antimicrobial resistance, relations between CAC and other international organizations and issues regarding food integrity/authenticity. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Office of the Under Secretary for Food Safety and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration are holding an April 13, 2016, public meeting in College Park, Maryland, to discuss U.S. draft positions for consideration at the 43rd Session of the Codex Committee on Labeling in Foods (CCFL) in Ottawa, Canada, on May 9-13. CCFL is charged with drafting food labeling provisions and addressing issues related to the advertisement of food with particular claims or misleading descriptions. Agenda items for the April 13 meeting include discussion papers focused on Internet food sales and the labeling of non-retail containers; proposed revisions to guidelines for use of the term “Halal”; and date marking. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Office of the Under Secretary for Food Safety and U.S. Food and Drug Administration are convening a March 7, 2016, public meeting in College Park, Maryland, to evaluate draft positions for consideration at the 10th Session of the Codex Committee on Contaminants in Food slated for April 4-8 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Agenda items for the March 7 meeting include papers about maximum levels for methylmercury in fish and mycotoxins in spices; and discussions of a draft Code of Practice to prevent and reduce arsenic contamination in rice and proposed draft maximum levels for cadmium in cocoa and cocoa-derived products. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Office of the Under Secretary for Food Safety and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration are convening a February 16, 2016, public meeting in College Park, Maryland, to discuss draft U.S. positions for consideration at the 48th Session of the Codex Committee on Food Additives (CCFA) in Xi’an, China, on March 14-18. Among other things, CCFA is responsible for establishing or endorsing permitted maximum levels of individual food additives, proposing risk assessments to the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives and recommending labeling standards for food additives. Agenda activities for the February 16 meeting will include discussion of a paper about the use of specific food additives in wine production; draft revisions to the food category 01.1 “Milk and dairy-based drinks”; and use levels for paprika extract. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Office of the Under Secretary for Food Safety and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have announced an October 19, 2015, public meeting in Washington, D.C., to discuss draft U.S. positions for review at the 47th Session of the Codex Committee on Food Hygiene (CCFH) slated for November 9-13 in Boston, Mass. Among other things, CCFH is responsible for prioritizing topics related to microbiological risk assessments and drafting basic hygiene provisions applicable to all food. Agenda items for October 19 include proposed draft guidelines for controlling nontyphoidal Salmonella in beef and pork meat and a discussion paper about revising the Code of Hygienic Practice for Fresh Fruits and Vegetables. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Office of the Under Secretary for Food Safety, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have announced a September 24, 2015, public meeting in College Park, Maryland, to discuss draft U.S. positions for consideration at the 34th Session of the Codex Committee on Fish and Fishery Products (CCFFP) slated for October 19-24 in Alesund, Norway. The CCFFP develops global standards for fresh, frozen (including quick frozen) or otherwise processed fish, crustaceans and molluscs. Agenda items at the September gathering will include draft codes of practice for processing of fish sauce and processing of fresh and quick-frozen raw scallops as well as proposed food additive provisions in standards for fish and fishery products. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Office of the Under Secretary for Food Safety and the Agricultural Marketing Service have announced an August 19, 2015, public meeting in Washington, D.C., to discuss draft U.S. positions for consideration at the 2nd Session of the Codex Committee on Spices and Culinary Herbs (CCSCH) slated for September 14-18 in Goa, India. The CCSCH sets global standards for dried and dehydrated spices and culinary herbs in whole, ground, cracked or crushed form. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has announced a June 17, 2015, public meeting in Washington, D.C. to provide information and receive comments about draft U.S. positions to be discussed during the 38th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission in Geneva, Switzerland, July 6-11. Agenda items at the June 17 meeting include (i) proposed amendments to the procedural manual; (ii) amendments to Codex standards and related texts; (iii) implementation status of the Commission’s five-year strategic plan; and (v) relations between the Commission and other international organizations. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Office of the Under Secretary for Food Safety, Food and Drug Administration, and Department of Health and Human Services have announced a February 23, 2015, public meeting in College Park, Maryland, to discuss draft positions for consideration at the 9th Session of the Codex Committee on Contaminants in Food in New Delhi, India on March 16-20. The lengthy agenda for the February meeting includes (i) maximum levels for lead in ready-to-drink fruit juices and nectars as well as in canned fruits and vegetables; (ii) proposed draft maximum levels for inorganic arsenic in husked rice; (iii) a proposed draft Code of Practice for the Prevention and Reduction of Arsenic Contamination in Rice; (iv) proposed draft maximum levels for cadmium in chocolate and cocoa-derived products; (v) a discussion paper about the feasibility of developing a Code of Practice for mycotoxins in spices; and (vi) a priority list…

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Office of the Under Secretary for Food Safety and the Food and Drug Administration have announced a February 17, 2015, public meeting in College Park, Maryland, to discuss draft U.S. positions for consideration during the 47th Session of the Codex Committee on Food Additives slated for March 23-27 in Xi’an, China. Agenda items at the February meeting include (i) provisions of food category 14.2.3 “grape wines” and its sub-categories; (ii) potentially replacing Note 161 with an alternative regarding provisions for sweeteners; (iii) the commercial use of potassium diacetate; and (iv) a proposal revising food category 01.1 “milk and dairy based drinks” and its sub-categories.
