The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced a public meeting to hear from stakeholders on positions for the December 2022 meeting of the Codex Committee on Food Hygiene. Topics to be covered include draft guidelines for controlling E. coli in raw beef, fresh leafy vegetables, raw milk, raw cheese and sprouts as well as draft guidelines for the safe use and reuse of water in food production. The meeting is scheduled for October 27, 2022.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced a June 21, 2019, public meeting to discuss several general Codex Alimentarius Commission issues, including the adoption and revocation of Codex Texts, amendments to Codex Standards, the Codex Strategic Plan 2020-2025 and matters arising from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the World Health Organization. The meeting will also feature a discussion of budgetary and financial matters, including a 2018-2019 progress report and a proposal for 2020-2021.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced an April 9, 2019, public meeting to receive comments on the United States' positions for the Codex Committee on Food Labelling meeting to be held in Canada in May 2019. Among the announced topics are (i) "Proposed draft Guidance for the Labelling of Non-Retail Containers"; (ii) "Proposed draft Guidelines of Front-of-Pack Nutrition Labelling"; (iii) "Innovation—use of technology in food labelling"; (iv) "Labelling of alcoholic beverages"; and (v) "Criteria for the definition of 'high in' nutritional descriptors for fats, sugars, and sodium."

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced the intention to establish a 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee and has solicited nominations for membership. The committee will consist of 13 to 20 members and will begin meeting in late 2018 or early 2019. The U.S. Codex Office will hold a public meeting on September 26, 2018, to receive public comments on U.S. positions for the Codex Committee on Food Import and Export Inspection and Certification Systems.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will sponsor a public meeting April 6, 2018, in Washington, D.C., to provide information and receive public comment on U.S. draft positions for the Codex Committee on Methods of Analysis and Sampling meeting to be held in Budapest, Hungary, May 7-11, 2018. The committee is responsible for defining criteria and serving as a coordinating body for groups working on analysis, sampling and quality assurance systems applicable to foods.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Food and Drug Administration and the Agricultural Marketing Service will sponsor three meetings in September and October 2017 to provide information and receive comments on U.S. positions to be discussed at upcoming Codex Alimentarius Commission meetings. On September 1, the agencies will discuss U.S. positions for the Committee on Fresh Fruits and Vegetables, which meets in Uganda on October 2-6, 2017. The public meeting to discuss positions for the Committee on Food Labeling is scheduled for September 13, before the committee meets in Paraguay on October 16-20, 2017. Finally, the agencies will hold a public meeting to discuss positions for the Committee of Food Hygiene on October 11, before the committee’s meeting in Chicago on November 13-17, 2017.   Issue 645

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Office of the Deputy Under Secretary for Food Safety and the Agricultural Marketing Service are convening a January 17, 2017, public meeting in Washington, D.C., to evaluate draft positions for consideration at the 3rd Session of the Codex Committee on Spices and Culinary Herbs (CCSCH) slated for February 6-10 in Chennai, India. Agenda items for the January 17 meeting include draft standards for cumin, thyme and oregano; a draft standard for black, white and green pepper; and sampling plans for cumin and thyme. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Office of the Under Secretary for Food Safety and Agricultural Marketing Service are convening an August 1, 2016, public meeting in Washington, D.C., to evaluate draft positions and receive public comments in advance of the 28th Session of the Codex Committee on Processed Fruits and Vegetables (CCPFV) slated for September 12-16 in Washington, D.C. The CCPFV sets global standards for canned, dried and frozen products as well as fruit and vegetable juices and nectars. Agenda items for the August 1 meeting include (i) food additive provisions in Codex standards for processed fruits and vegetables, (ii) a discussion paper about the standardization of dry and dried produce, and (iii) proposed draft annexes on quick frozen vegetables.
